A studio bike fit or a bike shop check: where the difference actually lies

A studio bike fit or a bike shop setup check: the difference is who has a stake in the outcome, and how far the analysis goes. When each one is the right choice.

The question almost always arrives in the same form: my shop already set the bike up, so why would I pay for this again? It is a fair question, and the honest answer is not that shops do poor work. These are two different services with two different purposes, and the differences can be named precisely.

Who has a stake in the outcome

A fitting in a bike shop happens in a room where a bike has just been sold or is about to be. That is not an accusation, it is a description of a business model: the setup belongs to the sale and is often billed together with the bike. If the riding position ends up showing that the frame is the wrong one, that finding sits against revenue already in the room.

Here that stake does not exist. I sell no bikes, work with no dealer on commission, and have no brand of my own on a shelf. What comes out at the end of the session earns me nothing and costs me nothing. That is not a character reference, it is a matter of structure, and it is the one difference on this page a shop cannot copy without changing its own business.

What a shop check does well

A good mechanic sets a new bike up cleanly: saddle height, saddle position, bar height, cleats. Many have done it for years and do it well. For a new bike in the right size and a rider with no complaints, that is frequently the right service, and nobody needs a studio appointment for it.

That framing is on my cost page as well, because it belongs to the price: when the cheaper route is enough, the cheaper route is the sensible one.

What a studio session adds

The difference is not care, it is scope and order. A shop check starts with the bike. A session here starts with you.

  • Movement screening before anything on the bike is changed
  • Analysis under realistic load rather than stationary
  • Exercises to take away: a general list every time, targeted exercises when the screening shows a weak point
  • Fit report with the final measurements, so the position stays reproducible

Two notes on that, because both are often misrepresented. The bike is fitted to the movement you bring on the day, not to an improved version of you. You are given the exercises, the improvement is yours. And this order is nothing rare among bike fitters, it is common practice. It separates a studio session from a shop check, not from the work of other fitters. I helped build comparable movement screenings at the HTC-Columbia WorldTour team in 2008 and 2009, and similar screenings are now widespread in professional cycling.

Buying a bike is where the difference shows most

Before a purchase you are making a decision worth several thousand euros that you want to get right once. That is where it matters most who earns what.

If you have already settled on a dealer because you value their workshop or their service, I look for a solution inside that dealer’s range first. If nothing there works, I say so plainly, and I still will not send you to another shop. Instead I describe what the bike would have to do, and you take that conversation to your dealer. That limit is the proof of the neutrality, not a caveat to it.

Which route is right for you

  • New bike, right size, no complaints: the shop setup
  • A small correction to a setup that basically works: the shop, or a follow-up session
  • Pain, numbness, or a position that drifts on longer rides: a studio session
  • Before buying a bike, or with frame and geometry questions: buying advice, independent of the dealer
  • A new discipline, a large jump in volume, or a return after injury: a studio session

Frequently Asked Questions

Isn't the setup at the bike shop enough?

For a new bike that fits and a rider with no complaints, it often is exactly right. A properly set starting point is worth far more than none.

Once something hurts, changes while you ride, or a bigger decision is coming, the check reaches its limit. It is scoped as an assessment of the bike, not an analysis of how you move.

Bike fitting in Bensheim

What is the most important difference?

Who has a stake in the outcome. In a shop the setup is part of selling a bike. Here I sell no bikes, work with no dealer on commission, and carry no house brand.

After that comes scope: a movement screening before anything on the bike is touched, analysis under load, exercises to take away, and a report with the final measurements.

Is that order something special?

Among bike fitters, no. Screening before working on the bike is common practice, and that is a good thing.

The difference is against a shop check, which serves a different purpose and is therefore scoped differently.

I bought my bike there. Is that a problem?

No, and it changes nothing. I do not grade your purchase and I will not talk you into a second bike.

In buying advice too, I stay with the dealer you chose and look for a solution inside their range first.
